Position/Grant: Research grant (BI)

PTDC/ECM/099752/2008

General Scientific Area: Civil Engineering

Specific Scientific Area: Fluvial Hydraulics

IMAR-CMA invites graduate engineers to apply for one year Research Grant (BI) to work in the framework of the research project PTDC/ECM/099752/2008, ” Study of open-channel vegetated flows”, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. The general objective of the proposed research program is to devise a closed conceptual model for the flow over vegetated boundaries at scales of the order of magnitude of the larger wavelength. The methodological proposal comprises theoretical and experimental work performed in both, field and laboratory. The present call for candidates pertains to field work.

1. Period and Type of Contract:

The position is for 12 months, beginning not before December 2010, with a full time exclusive regime according to Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources of FCT (http://www.fct.mctes.pt/pt/apoios/formacao/ambitoprojectos) and internal rules of IMAR-CMA. The work will be developed at FCT-New University of Lisbon (www.fct.unl.pt).

2. Working plan:

Preparation and realization of experimental field work to study the interaction between the flow and vegetation in rivers. The preparation of the field measurements implies the adjustment of laboratory equipment to work in the field. Field work includes measuring instantaneous velocity fields with Doppler instrumentation. The grant holder will contribute to the data treatment, analysis and interpretations.

3. Scientific supervision: Prof. Mário J. Franca.

4. Academic Degree Required/Qualifications:

M.Sc. in Civil, Environment, Mechanics, Physics Engineering or related areas, with a classification of Good (14/20) and a solid background in physics are desirable. Applicants should have good written and oral English skills.

5. Remuneration:

According to the Advanced Fellowships and Grants established by FCT to BI (http://www.fct.mctes.pt/pt/apoios/bolsas/valores/, http://www.fct.mctes.pt/pt/apoios/bolsas/valores/).

6. Application documents:

6.1 Curriculum vitae.

6.2 Copy of Degree Certificate.

6.3 Any other elements that the candidate may judge useful.

7. Beginning and conclusion of the call: 29 October - 15 November 2010.
